The Junior Achievement Student Center (designed by Michael Welsch while working as Art Director at Spindustry Systems) is a site with an unconventional approach to navigation. The map-style navigation system found on the home page is more typical of an interface you might find at a kiosk. Once you enter a section/building you are directed to one of several centers, each one with it's own sponsor and color-code. Against our recommendations, the client wanted the map to be the only main navigation into the site. Once you get past the fact that there is no traditional top or left hand navigation, the map, with its mouse over link descriptions, is easy enough to follow. Still, we would have liked to see top navigation (as found on the inside pages) in addition to the map navigation on the home page. You may question “Why put example work in this portfolio when you'd like to see it different,” to which I would respond that this is still a nice site with a level of uniqueness that warrants being shared. As you browse the top level navigation and drill down through the “Find a Career ” section you will find a nice clean system of colors and icons that assists in way finding while adding visual interest to the site. |
